Charles Ofori Antipem, from Ghana, has developed a unique kit to learn Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). This kit is simply named: Science Set. It is actually a mini science laboratory (Science Lab) which comprises 45 individual materials (components) with which one can perform over 26 basic scientific experiments. And all of them can fit on a student’s desk.

Some of the kit's components are Diodes and Switches, Resistors and Capacitors, Light, Electrical Circuits, Electromagnetism, Transistors, etc. In other words, students can conduct scientific activities in electricity, electronics, magnetism and electromagnetism, etc. Charles Antipem and Michael Asante-Afrifa (co-developer) are focusing on using the Science Set to help students learn in an experiential way. They know and understand that teaching theoretical concepts only is not going to help Africa solve her problems.

The Science Set is produced in Ghana, more precisely in Kumasi, by Dext Technology Ltd., Charles Antipem’s company. The content of the “Science Set” takes into account Academic Standards from around the World. As of today, about 30,000 students in Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Germany, the United States, etc. do perform experiments with the Science Set kit at school. The quality of the product is such that the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK) has requested Dext Technology Ltd. to supply kits to 500 schools in the UK.

But the main objective must not be lost as Charles Antipem would like to encourage African students to pursue careers in STEM fields. And this goal is normally achievable because Antipem and his team are not only demystifying science, but they are also democratizing it. The Science Set costs about $30.
